Company History

Grieder Sod and Landscaping started as a farm in Carlock, IL. originally cutting sod with a hand sod cutter for the construction of Highway 74. Officially, the family owned business started as a sod farm a few years later in 1970. Widely known for the production of fine quality bluegrass sod, Grieders eventually began installing their product and then trees, shrubs, and other landscape materials. In 1987 Grieders opened an office in Bloomington on Airport Road at what was then the corner of G.E. Road. With the city and the company quickly outgrowing that location, Grieders started looking for a more permanent location on the east side of Bloomington.

Still Growing.... In 1992 we started the construction of a building to house the landscaping company on Towanda-Barnes Road. The operation was moved early in 1993 to our current location at 1804 Towanda-Barnes Road. Still growing, in 1995 we added another building for the opening of Grieder Garden Center. In 1997 the city of Bloomington (also growing) extended G.E. Road to Towanda-Barnes Road and we were back on the corner.

Still Growing.... Outgrowing the Towanda Barnes location, in spring of 2008, Grieder Landscaping moved its landscape crew operations to the old Heidelberg Gravel pit on Rt. 150 near Downs. This move enabled both the Garden Center and Landscaping division the room they needed for continued growth. The move has allowed for the expansion of more hardscape and plant material selection.The Downs facility was created as a material yard for our landscape division and our wholesale customers. In addition to the convenience of two locations, wholesale customers should benefit from faster loading service. Customers are urged to call ahead as there is no staffed office at the Downs location. The landscape and design offices are still at the Towanda Barnes location. Retail pick ups at the Down location are by appointment only. Appointments can be made through the landscape office.

Still Growing...In a constant effort to diversify beyond a seasonal business, Grieders has also added Grieder Mini Storage at this location.

Still owned by Denny Grieder, the company continues to grow and is most proud of the team of employees that have made this a success.
