Shrubs

 

Shrub selection and placement is a very important element of any successful landscape or garden design. Variety including sun or shade, compact or large, deciduous or evergreen need to be taken into consideration when choosing the right shrub for the specific location. Shrub texture, flowering time, and color can also influence your decision.

We have selected the following shrubs for their landscape and garden versatility here in Central Illinois, but do not hesitate to contact us for any special orders or questions you may have about another particular shrub.

Althea, 'Aphrodite', Rose of Sharon Hibiscus syriacus 'Aphrodite' 8 - 10'H x 6 - 8'W Growth Rate:  medium Full Sun. Deciduous shrub with green leaves through the season and no real fall color -- The wonderful attribute are the flowers -- Perfect, 5-petaled, white to red or purple or violet in double and single form start in July and last through the season.

Arborvitae, 'Emerald Green' Thuja occidentalis 'Smaragd' 10 - 15'H x 3 - 4'W Growth Rate:  slow to medium Full Sun to Part Shade. Bright lustrous emerald green foliage in more or less vertical sprays that does not discolor in wither.  Useful as a specimen or accent, good for hedges and as a foundation plant.

Arborvitae, 'Globe' Thuja occidentalis 'Globe' 4 - 6'H x 4 - 6'W Growth Rate:  slow to medium Full Sun to Part Shade. Dwarf, globular; leaves green, slightly grayish green in winter.

Arborvitae, 'Hetz Midget' Thuja occidentalis, 'Hetz Midget' 2 - 3'H x 2 - 3'W Growth Rate:  slow to medium Full Sun to Part Shade. Dense, globe-shaped form that has fine rich green foliage -- Evergreen.--  Dense compact growth requires little pruning.

Arborvitae, 'Holmstrup' Thuja occidentalis 'Holmstrup' 8 - 10'H x 2 - 4'W Growth Rate:  slow Partial Shade to Full Sun. Compact, slow growing, pyramidal form with bright green, tight, bunchy vertically arranged foliage that is good for low hedges.

Arborvitae, 'Techny' Thuja occindetalis, 'Techny' 8 - 10'H x 5 - 7'W Growth Rate:  slow to medium Full Sun to Part Shade. Broad based pyramidal form, excellent dark green foliage year round -- Great hedge plant -- Excellent foundation plant.

Azalea, 'Crimson' Rhododendron 'Exbury' 6 - 8'H x 4 - 6'W Growth Rate:  slow  Full Shade to Part Shade. Spring-time fills with crimson-red blossoms on a robust, upright growing shrub.  Excellent as a specimen shrub in a shade garden or as a foundation plant.

Azalea, 'Gibraltar' Rhododendron 'KnapHill' 6 - 8'H x 4 - 6'W Growth Rate:  slow to medium Full Shade to Part Shade. A hardy deciduous shrub that makes a nice specimen or foundation plant.  Late spring has a showy display of spectacular flame-orange flower clusters with ruffled petals.  Very heat tolerant.

Azalea, 'Golden Lights' Rhododendron 'Northern Lights' 4 - 6'H x 4 - 6'W Growth Rate:  slow to medium Full Shade to Part Shade. Yellow, fragrant flower buds appear on naked stems in May and are nothing short of spectacular.  A very hardy deciduous shrub that is an excellent foundation or specimen plant.

Azalea, 'Herbert' Rhododendron x 'Herbert' 3 - 4'H x 3 - 4'W Growth Rate:  slow Part Shade. Beautiful purple spring flowers.--  Good plant for foundation or border planting on the east or north side of the house in a protected area.

Azalea, 'Rosy Lights'  Rhododendron x 'Rosy Lights' 3 - 5'H x 3 - 5'W Growth Rate:  slow Part Shade to Part Sun. Amazing spring time display of flowers.  Semi-evergreen with good fall foliage.  Needs protection from the winter winds and the hot summer sun.  Wonderful as an accent plant or border plant.

Barberry, 'Crimson Pygmy' Berberis thunbergii, 'Atropurpurea Nana' 1.5 - 2'H x 2.5 - 3'W Growth Rate:  Medium Full Sun. Deciduous compact shrub with a rounded form -- Richly colored dard red to purple leaves that turn Bright orange-red in fall -- Excellent as a foundation planting, accent shrub, or as a low hedge.

Barberry, 'Golden' Berberis thunbergii, 'Aurea' 3 - 4'H x 4 - 5'W Growth Rate:  Slow Full Sun. Dense shrub with bright yellow foliage that turns red-orange in fall -- Extremely hardy and durable shrub that prefers dry conditions.

Barberry, 'Royal Burgundy' Berberis thunbergii, 'Gentry' 2'H x 3'W Growth Rate:  medium Full Sun. Tidy compact form with a spreading habit is versatile for filling out planting areas in groups or masses.  Performs in containers and adds zesty color among perennials.  This is a deciduous shrub that does not fade in the summer heat and has an even richer hue in the fall.  Winter displays bright red berries.

Blueberry, 'Bluecrop' Vaccinium corymbosum 6 - 8'H x 8 - 10'W Growth Rate:  slow Full Sun to Part Shade. An upright shrub that is hardy and drought resistant that blends well into the shrub border.  Midseason provides an abundance of flavorful fruit.

Boxwood, 'Green Mountain' Buxus x 'Green Mountain' 4 - 5'H x 2 -3'W Growth Rate:  medium Full Sun to Part Shade. When young this is a vigorous grower that maintains a natural cone-shape.  It has a dense upright form with bright evergreen leaves throughout the year.  Provides an excellent hedge or forndation planting.

Boxwood, 'Green Velvet' Buxus x 'Green Velvet' 2 - 3'H x 2 -3'W Growth Rate:  slow to medium Full Sun to Part Shade. Very versatile compact, dense evergreen.--  Can be pruned to shape or let grow natural -- Fills in any trouble spots and adds year round interest to any yard.

Boxwood, 'Wintergreen' Buxus microphylla var. koreana 'Winter Green' 2 - 4'H x 2 - 4'W Growth Rate:  slow Part Shade to Full Sun. This is an excellent evergreen shrub that is very uniform and works best as a hedge either to soften a bed or to create the feel of enclosure around a patio.

Buckeye, 'Bottlebrush' Aesculus parviflora 6 - 10'H x 8 - 12'W Growth Rate:  slow Full Shade to Full Sun. This shrub fills with 8 to 12" long cylindrical 2 to 4" whide panicles in June or July.  The fall leaf color can be a particularly brilliant yellow depending on the season.  This is an excellent plant ro massing, cluping, placing in shrub borders, or even as a specimen.

Burning Bush Euonymus alata 'Compacta' 5'H x 5'W Growth Rate:  medium to fast Full Sun. Deciduous shrub with green leaves through the season -- The name comes from the brilliant fall display -- Wonderful hedge or specimen plant.

Butterfly Bush Buddleia davidii 4 - 12'H x 3 - 7'W Growth Rate:  fast Full Sun. A fine addition to the perennial or shrub border and nice when used in mass because of its prolific blooming ability in a range of colors from mid-season until frost.  The full size will depend on the variety and the amount of pruning, which it accepts readily.  Deadheading is required to help promote more of the 4 to 10" long panicles of flowers that attract several types of butterflies and hummingbirds.

Caryopteris Caryopteris x clandonensis 2 - 4'H x 2 - 4'W Growth Rate:  average Part Shade to Full Sun. This full rounded shrub is grown for its beautiful fragrant foliage and butterfly attracting abundant flowers that begin mid-season and persist until frost.  It best placed in full sun for more blossoms.  It should be treated more as a herbaceous perennial and cut back in late winter or early spring.  Makes a perfect addition to any shrub or pernnial bed or can be used as an amazing hedge.

Chokeberry Aronia 5 - 8'H 3 - 5'W Growth Rate:  slow to average Part Shade to Full Sun. This is a full four season wonder.  Spring time has a display of fragrant white blossoms.  Summer time provides lustrous deep green leaves with a grayish underside.  Fall has a spectacular display of red foliage.  Winter is filled with small berries that attract birds.  A nice addition to any shrub or perennial bed or used in a mass planting, such as a property border.

Clethra, 'Hummingbird Clethra alnifolia 'Hummingbird' 3'H x 4'W Growth Rate:  slow to medium Full Sun. This is a beautiful compact and florific summersweet.  Bottle-brush-like 2 to 6" long fragrant white flowers cover this shrub in mid-summer.  The leaves turn a nice yellow color in fall.  It is wonderful used in shrub or perennial beds or in mass plantings and attract butterflies and hummingbirds to the landscape.

Clethra, 'Sixteen Candles' Clethra alnifolia 'Sixteen Candles' 3'H x 4'W Growth Rate:  slow Full Sun to Part Shade. This dense, compact habit makes it an ideal shrub for small gardens, planted in mass, mixed into perennial borders, or along foundations.  It also grows well in wet areas.  Summertime fills the shrub with prolific white fragrant flower spikes that attract butterflies.

Clethra, 'Summersweet' Clethra alnifolia 3 - 6'H x 4 - 6'W Growth Rate:  slow to medium Shade to Full Sun. This shrub is late to leaf out, but well worth the wait.  The leaves emerge a lustrous deep green and in fall turn a pale yellow to rich golden brown.  July into August begins a brilliant display or perfect, white, delightflully fragrant 2 to 6" long panicles of flowers that attract butterflies and hummingbirds.  This is an under-used shrub that adds a nice accent to any yard.

Cotoneaster, 'Cranberry' Cotoneaster apiculatus 2 - 3'H x 3 - 6'W Growth Rate:  slow Part Shade to Full Sun. An extremely handsome shrub to be used as an effective ground cover to stabilize banks or to cascade over walls.  It is filled with small bright red berries in August through November and the dark glossy green leaves turn a good brozy-red to purplish fall color.  Prefers hot dry locations and works great in a rock garden.

Cotoneaster, 'Hessei'  Cotonoeaster horizontalis x 'Hessei' 2 - 3'H x 5 - 8'W Growth Rate:  slow to medium Part Shade to Full Sun. A nice ground cover plant that fits in well descending steps as a bank cover, in masses, or used for espalier especially on walls.  Spring time has a nice show of small, perfect, pink flowers that become small bright red berries in late August through October.  The glossy dark green leaves change to reddish purple combinations in the fall and hold into late November.

Currant, 'Alpine' Ribes alpinum 3 - 6'H x 4 - 8'W Growth Rate:  medium Full Shade to Full Sun. This shrub makes a good hedge.  April has a show of greenish yellow blossoms that become juicy scarlet berries in June or July on the female plants.  Very adaptable and has a densely twiggy, rounded habit.

Daphne, 'Carol Mackie'  Daphne x burkwoodii 2 - 3'H x 3 - 5'W Growth Rate:  slow Part Shade to Full Sun. This is a semi-evergreen with beautiful characteristics.  Spring time has a flush of delicate pinkish-white fragrant blossoms on a compact oval shrub whose leaves are variegated, cream rimmed green.  It makes a nice accent or edging plant in any garden.

Deutzia, 'Nikko'  Deutzia gracilis 2 - 4'H x 3 - 4'W Growth Rate:  slow to medium Part Shade to Full Sun. This is a graceful, free flowering shrub that makes a low, broad mound of slender ascending branches.  In mid- to late May, the plant is covered with perfect, pure white 1 1/2 to 3" long panicles of flowers that ripple in the breeze.  The fall color can be a striking red.  Works wonderful in masses or used as a hedge.  Benefits from severe pruning every couple of years to promote new fresh growth.

Dogwood, 'Isanti' Cornus sericea 5 - 7'H x 6 - 8'W Growth Rate:  fast Full Sun A beautiful four season specimen.  Late may to early June displays white 1 1/2 to 2 1/2" diameter flat-topped flowers.  The medium to dark green leaves turn a purplis to reddish color in the fall.  The true display is in winter when the vibrant red branches add quite the accent to any landscape.  Very effective in mass plantings, as specimens in a shrub border, or to hold soil on banks.  Striking when framed with snow.

Dogwood, 'Variegated' Cornus alba 'Elegantissima' 6 - 8'H x 4 - 6'W Growth Rate:  medium Full Sun to Part Shade. This is a extremely hardy, medium-sized, deciduous shrub that makes an amazing display year-round.  Spring has a flush of showy fragrant flowers that develop into ornamental berries in the fall.  The leaves appear whispy with a creamy white margin.  The winter stems are a vibrant red.    Nice as an accent in a perennial bed, foundation plant, or in mass.

Dogwood, 'Yellowtwig' Cornus sericea 'Flaviramea' 6 - 8'H x 7 - 9'W Growth Rate:   medium Full Sun to Part Shade. This is an excellent shrub for moist situations that is rewarding year-round.  White spring flowers become white berries in the fall.  It is an extremely hardy deciduous plant that showcases bright yellow stems for the winter landscape.  Can be used as an excellent specimen to lighten darker or empty areas in the winter or as a hedge or foundation plant.

Elderberry, 'Black Beauty' Sambucus nigra 'Gerda' 6 - 8'H x 6 - 8'W Growth Rate:  fast Full Sun. Expect extraordinary color in foliage and flower.  Dark purple foliage fills this striking shrub throughout the growing season.  Early summer provides a delightful display of large clusters of small bright pink, lemon-scented flowers that mature in fall to dark berries that attract songbirds or can be used in pies.  Very hardy and pest and disease free.  This makes a nice informal hedge or a striking specimen and can even be pruned into a small tree.

Elderberry, 'Black Lace' Sambucus nigra 'Black Lace' 5 - 7'H x 5 - 7'W Growth Rate:  fast Full Sun. Creamy pink flowers appear in spring and contrast nicely with the dark purple lacey leaves.  They are followed by blackish red fall berries that attract songbirds or can be havested for jam or pies.  This is an ideal substitute for the Japanese Maple.  The leaves are just as striking and the shrub is extremely durable and adaptable, even to our winds.  Can be used as a dramatic accent plant, planted en masse, or mixed into the perennial border.

Euonymus, 'Emerald Gaiety' Euonymus fortunei 'Emerald Gaiety' 2'H x 4'W Growth Rate:  fast Full Sun. Small erect form of dense branching habit, distinguished by the irregular variegated leaves -- The leaves becomes pink tinged in winter.--  Excellent ground cover or climber if supported.

Euonymus, 'Emerald 'N Gold' Euonymus fortunei 'Emerald 'N Gold' 1.5 - 2'H x 2 - 5'W Growth Rate:  fast Full Sun. Low growing, tight branching habit that makes it an excellent groundcover -- Striking green and gold leaves that turn pink-red in winter -- Provides year-round landscape contrast.

Euonymus, 'Moonshadow' Thuja occidentalis 'Globe' 4 - 6'H x 4 - 6'W Growth Rate:  slow to medium Full Sun to Part Shade. Dwarf, globular; leaves green, slightly grayish green in winter.

Euonymus, 'Sarcoxie' Euonymus fortunei 'Sarcoxie' 4 - 6'H x 2'W Growth Rate:  fast Full Sun to Part Shade. Upright form with polished dark green leaves.--  Amazing climber that adds vertical interest to any bed -- Adapts well to any soil.

Euonymus, 'Sunspot' Euonymus fortunei 'Sunspot' 3'H x 4 - 5'W Growth Rate:  fast Full Sun. Rounded, compact, shapely form with good winter hardiness -- Thick green leaves with pronounced yellow centers add great color and background to the landscape.

Forsythia Forsythia 5 - 6'H x 5 - 6'W Growth Rate:  fast Full Sun. Beautiful show of yellow flowers in early spring -- Green leaves through out the season -- Late fall has the leaves turning a deep burgundy color -- Striking as a hedge or as a single deciduous specimen.

Fothergilla Fothergilla gardenii 3 - 6'H x 3 - 6'W Growth Rate:  slow Part Shade to Full Sun. In spring time this shrub fills with very showy and fragrant white flowers.  The leaves emerge a rich green color and make a spectacular display of orange and red in the fall.  Works  well in combination with rhododendrons and azaleas or used in borders, masses, or foundation plantings.

Holly, 'China' Ilex x meserveae 'Mesdob' or 'Mesog' 3 - 6'H x 3 - 4'W Growth Rate:  slow to medium Full Sun to Part Shade. Evergreen shrub that has a compact rounded shape -- Excellent cold hardiness with rich red berries through the winter that attract birds -- Requires male and female to set fruit.

Holly, 'Inkberry Shamrock' Ilex glabra 'Shamrock' 6 - 8'H x 4 - 6'W Growth Rate:  slow Full Sun to Part Shade. Handsome compact form with lustrous deep green leaves -- Adds beauty to any winter landscape, since it is a broad leaf evergreen.

Holly, 'Red Sprite' Ilex verticillata 'Red Sprite' 3 - 5'H x 3 - 5'W Growth Rate:  slow to medium Full Sun to Part Shade. This is a striking holly that has a compact habit and is deciduous, but the vibrant red berries persist well into the winter months.  It does need the male counterpart, 'Jim Dandy' for cross pollination.  Can be used in a perennial border or as a hedge.

Holly, 'Winterberry' Ilex pedunculosa 'Winterberry' 5 - 7'H x 4 - 6'W Growth Rate:  slow Full Sun. Multi stemmed, erect, deciduous rounded shrub -- Lustrous dark green leaves with bright red berries that last through the winter -- Requires male and female to set fruit.

Honeysuckle, 'Goldflame' Lonicera x heckrottii 'Goldflame' Up to 15' high. Growth Rate:  fast Full Sun to Part Shade. This is a semi-evergreen vine that provides a showy display of fragrant tubular flowers in a vibrant red and golden yellow color for a two tone effect from spring until frost.  The flowers are followed by red berries in the fall.  Even the foliage is a colorful blue green with the new growth having a violet tinge.  This vine can be trained along trellises, arbors, fences, and made into an espalier or cut back to force branching into a bushier shrub form.  It will attract songbirds, hummingbirds, and butterflies to the landscape.

Hydrangea, 'All Summer Beauty' Hydrangea macrophylla 3 - 4'H x 3 - 4'W Growth Rate:  fast Full Shade to Part Sun. This is a beautiful shrub that fills with large pom-pom shaped blosoms in late spring and early summer.  The flowers are a nice blue color in acidic soil and fade to a pinkish purple in more neutral soil.  Nicely fills in and adds quite a show to a shady area.  The flowers are nice dried and put in bouquets.

Hydrangea, 'Annabelle' Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle' 3 - 5'H x 3 - 5'W Growth Rate:  fast Part Shade. Cut to the ground in late winter and lightly fertilize -- By June or July the regrowth will produce stunning flowers that last for up to two months -- As the flowers fade, they can be cut, hung to dry, and used in dried flower arrangements -- This can often produce a second flush of flowers in September.

Hydrangea, 'Blue Wave' Hydrangea macrophylla 4 - 6'H x 4 - 6'W Growth Rate:  fast Full Shade to Part Sun. Another beautiful bigleaf hydrangea that fills with a flush of lace cap blossoms.  The blossoms are a rich blue color in acidic soil, otherwise pink to lilac.  This shrub makes quite a statement in the shade and can be used as a specimen or in mass.

Hydrangea, 'Climbing'  Decumaria barbara 20 - 30'H Growth Rate:  average Full Shade to Part Sun. Late spring to early summer has a wonderful display of white fragrant blossoms.  The leaves are a rich green color and turn a nice yellow in the fall.  This is a prolific climber that can be pruned to shape after the flowers fade.  Adds a nice vertical display to any wall, trellis, or arbor.

Hydrangea, 'Endless Summer' Hydrangea 4'H x 4'W Growth Rate:  medium to fast Part Shade to Full Sun. A brilliant blue, rounded habit, deciduous shrub that blooms all season -- The flowers can be cut and dried -- To keep it blue in our area, acid must be added to the soil or it will gradually turn to pink.

Hydrangea, 'Glowing Embers' Hydrangea macrophylla Alpengluhen (Glowing Embers) 3'H x 3'W Growth Rate:  fast Full Shade to Part Shade. Abundantly produced over a 2- to 3-month growing season that begins in midsummer, its immense flowerheads (8 inches or more across) glow with dazzling, rich crimson that changes as summer progresses, deepening with age into luminous purple tints like a fading sunset.  This shrub provides a "wow factor" for any shady area.  Extremely hardy and durable and the cut blossoms can be dried and used for years to come.

Hydrangea, 'Limelight' Hydrangea paniculata 5 - 7'H x 5 - 7'W Growth Rate:  average Part shade. In late summer, this shrub fills with triangle shaped panicles of fragrant lime green colored flowers.  The flowers are very eye-catching and help to brighten shade areas.  Any pruning should be done after the flowers fade.  The big glossy green leaves turn a nice yellow color in the fall.

Hydrangea, 'Nikko Blue' Hydrangea macrophylla 4 - 6'H x 4 - 6'W Growth Rate:  fast Full Shade to Part Shade. Mid to late summer produces an amazing display of fragrant large pom-pom shaped blossoms that fill the shrub.  In acidic soil, the blossoms are blue, but in e neutral soil they are pink to purple.  The blossoms dry nicely and make beautiful bouquets.  It is a striking addition to any shady spot as a specimen plant or in mass.

Hydrangea, 'Oakleaf' Hydrangea quercifolia 4 - 6'H x 4 - 6'W Growth Rate:  slow to medium Part Shade. A wonderful addition to any shady area not only for the beautiful flowers, but the amazing foliage.  The leaves are shaped like oak tree leaves and turn a brilliant red and purple color in the fall.  Late spring to early summer has the shrub covered in antique pink to white colored fragrant panicles of blossoms that dry nicely and look nice in bouquets.  Even winter has a nice show with exfoliating bark and interesting branching pattern.  Best used as a specimen plant in a shrub or perennial bed or as a highlight in a border.

Hydrangea, 'Pink Beauty' Hydrangea serrata 4 - 5'H x 4 - 6'W Growth Rate:  average Full Shade to Part Sun. Late spring to early summer is when this shrub fills with rich showy pink fragrant pom-pom shaped flowers that work well in arrangements or can be dried.  The large glossy green leaves turn an attractive red color in the fall.  Any pruning should be done immediately after the flowers fade.  This shrub works well in mass, as a hedge, or as a specimen in a shrub or perennial bed.

Hydrangea, 'Tardiva' Hydrangea paniculata 'Tardiva' 6 - 8'H x 8 - 10'W Growth Rate:  fast Full Sun to Part Shade. Upright, large shrub that flowers late in September -- The blooms start out white and slowly change to a puplish pink on pyramidal panicales about 8" long -- Provides a large splash of color when most things have finished for the year -- Beautiful as a specimen plant or a hedge.

Juniper, 'Andodrra' Juniperus horizontalis 'Plumosa Compacta Youngstown' 1 - 2'H x 4 - 5'W Growth Rate:  slow to medium Full Sun. Natural compact growth habit with deep green needles in summer that turn a lovely bronze-green after a hard frost -- Makes an excellent ground cover that provides year round landscape contrast

Juniper, 'Blue Chip' Juniperus horizontalis 'Blue Chip' 1 -2'H x 4 - 6'W Growth Rate:  slow to medium Full Sun. Low growing groundcover that displays bright vivid blue foliage throughout the seasons -- Provides excellent all-season color, texture, and landscape contrast.

Juniper, 'Blue Rug' Juniperus horizontalis 'Wiltonii' 6 - 8"H x 3 - 4'W Growth Rate:  slow to medium Full Sun. Attractive low growing evergreen with silvery-blue foliage in summer that turns purplis through winter -- Cascades nicely over retaining walls and provides year round interest.

Juniper, 'Blue Star' Juniperus squamata 'Blue Star' 1 - 2'H x 2 - 3'W Growth Rate:  slow Full Sun. Bluest foliage of all spreading junipers -- Naturally compact and rounded shape that provides year round color, texture, and landscape contrast.

Juniper, 'Broadmoor' Juniperus sabina 2 - 3'H x 10'W Growth Rate:  slow Full Sun. This is a low-spreading evergreen with a neat form that is very disease resistant.  These plants make excellent groundcovers and work well planted in mass or as foundation plants.

Juniper, 'Gold Tip' Juniperus chinensis 'Pfitzeriana Aurea' 3 - 4'H x 5 - 6'W Growth Rate:  slow Full Sun. New growth emerges bright yellow turning to golden-yellow on arching branches -- Great plant for foundation, rock garden, or specimen planting.

Juniper, 'Kallay' Juniperus chinensis 2 - 3'H x 4 - 6'W Growth Rate:  slow to medium Full Sunn. A flat-topped evergreen that can be used as a groundcover, foundation plant, specimen, or in mass.

Juniper, 'Saybrook Gold' Juniperus chinensis 'Saybrook Gold' 2 -3'H x 4 - 6'W Growth Rate:  slow to medium Full Sun to Part Shade. An excellent border plant that just glows.  It is an evergreen shrub with bright yellow foliage in the summer and more of a bronze-yellow in winter.  Color stays true and is a nice addition to any yard.

Juniper, 'Sea Green' Juniperus chinensis 'Sea Green' 3 - 4'H x 4 - 5'W Growth Rate:  medium Full Sun. Plume-like arching branches with short dark green needles providing excellent nesting for birds -- Grows well in almost any soil and provides year round interest.

Juniper, 'Spirals' Juniperus 8 - 15'H x 3 - 5'W Growth Rate:  slow to medium Full Sun to Part Shade. Full grown size depends on the variety.  Grieder Garden Center gets in an array of different styles and shapes of junipers each spring.  The pruning required to maintain the look is very minimal.  These fun accents add a nice touch of elegance to any yard or can be used in containers to highlight the entryway.

This is a great plant for the shrub border or used as an accent plant.  The deep green mostly purple foliage is its most striking feature.  In late spring to early summer there is a show of small fragrant pinkish white blossoms.  Winter displays the interesting branching habit and exfoliating bark.

Ninebark, 'Summerwine' Physocarpus opulifolius 'Seward' 4 - 6'H x 4 - 6'W Growth Rate:  medium to fast Full Sun. This shrub has a dense, compact habit that never gets leggy or out of control.  It adds color and vibrancy to any garden with its wine colored foliage and white button-like blooms in the spring.  It works best against a light colored backdrop at the foundation, en masse, or in a perennial bed.

Pieris, 'Mountain Fire' Pieris japonica 'Mountain Fire' 5 - 8'H x 5 - 8'W Growth Rate:  slow Part Shade. This is an excellent evergreen shrub for foundation plantings or in landscape groups due to its year-round display of color.  Beautiful fiery red new growth matures to a deep green.  It is a prolific producer of broad, pendulous white flower clusters that appear in early spring.  Just an amazing accent for those hard to fill spaces.

Pine, 'Mugho' Pinus mugo var. mughus 3 - 4'H x 3 - 4'W Growth Rate:  slow Full Sun to Part Shade. Short-needled conifer with a dense mounded globular habit -- Excellent green winter color that does well in almost any soil.

Potentilla Potentilla 2 - 3'H x 2 - 3'W Growth Rate:  medium Full Sun to Part Shade. Depending on the variety, has white, pink, yellow, or apricot flowers in late spring until hard frost -- Usually a compact shrub that is ideal in rock gardens or borders -- Plant in groups for best effect.

Privet, 'Vicary Golden' Ligustrum x vicaryi 10 - 12'H x 10 - 12'W Growth Rate:  average Part Sun to Full Sun. This shrub does best in full sun and is prized for its very attractive yellow and green foliage.  There is a flush of white flowers in the spring that is rather showy.  It grows quickly in youth and then slows as it ages.  Best used as a border or hedge.

Purpleleaf Sandcherry  Prunus cistena 6 - 8'H x 5 - 7'W Growth Rate:  medium Full Sun. This is a striking shrub that works well as a colorful border or as a specimen plant.  The leaves emerge a bright red in early spring, then delicate white flowers fill the plant in May.  The leaves stay a reddish purple color through the season.  It is a very hardy and forgiving shrub.

Rhododendron, 'Nova Zembla' Rhododendron catawbiense 4 - 6'H x 4 - 6'W Growth Rate:  slow Full Shade to Part Shade. One of the best for our area because it is cold tolerant and heat resistant.  Brilliant red flowers fill this evergreen shrub in mid to late May.  Beautiful as a specimen plant or when used en masse.

Rhododendron, 'Olga' Rhododendron P.J.M. 'Olga Mezitt' 3 - 4'H x 3 - 4'W Growth Rate:  slow Full Shade to Part Shade. Evergreen foliage turns light red in fall and winter.  this is a vigorous upright spreading plant.  Springtime shows the plant covered in peach-pink flowers that are very striking.  Makes a wonderful accent in a shade garden or used as a foundation plant.

Rhododendron, 'PJM' Rhododendron PJM 4 - 6'H x 4 - 6'W Growth Rate:  slow Full Shade to Part Sun. This is probably one of the easiest and most rewarding rhododendron to grow.  It has a compact habit with a mounded, neat appearance.  It is a small leaved evergreen with slightly fragrant leaves that turn a deep mahogany purple in the winter.  The plant fills in mid to late April with vivid lavender-pink blossoms.  This adds a nice focal point to any shady area.

Rose, 'Carefree Delight' Rosa 'Meipotal (Carefree Delight)' 2 - 3'H x 2 - 4'W Growth Rate:  average Full Sun. This truly is a carefree delight.  Summertime has a full display of delicate single-petalled fragrant flowers that are a rich pink color.  This show of blossoms continues through the season with very little deadheading required.  This is a fairly disease resistant variety that does not require any special attention prior to winter.

Rose,  'Carefree Wonder' Rosa x 'Meipitac' 3 - 4'H x 3 - 4'W Growth Rate:  medium Full Sun. Large lightly fragrant double blossoms that are hot pink with white "eyes" and cream reverse -- Abundant small bright green foliage that is very disease resistant -- Its carefree, hardy, rounded bushy growth habit makes it ideal in a border or as a specimen plant.

Rose, 'The Fairy Rosa x 'The Fairy' 2 - 3'H x 2 - 3'W Growth Rate:  medium Full Sun. Masses of blooms appear on this foolproof, hardy, disease-resistant shrub.  The pink flowers are very showy and fragrant and perfect for cut flower arrangements.  This rose is a nice addition to any garden and requires very little maintenance to be able to enjoy its endless blooming.

Rose, 'Flower Carpet' Rosa x 'Noelesa' 1 - 2'H x 2 - 4'W Growth Rate:  medium Full Sun. This is a versatile repeat blooming rose that is very disease resistant and requires very little maintenance.  It is filled with self-cleaning flowers for most of the season.  The single petaled flowers come in several shades from pink to yellow to red to coral and so on.  This shrub is excellent used in containers, as a border, or as a ground cover.

Rose, 'Knock Out' Rosa x 'Radrazz' 3'H x 3'W Growth Rate:  medium Full Sun. Large, single blossom, 3" florescent cherry-red flowers that continue all season long with no dead-heading -- Deep mossy green, disease resistant foliage provides a beautiful contrast to the flower color.--  Has a very hardy, rounded bushy growth habit that is absolutely carefree.

Rose, 'Nearly Wild' Rosa x 'Nearly Wild' 2 - 3'H x 4 - 5'W Growth Rate:  medium Full Sun. From early summer until frost the plant is covered with slightly apple scented blossoms that are five-petaled, single, and rose-pink -- Very attractive bushy growth with a disease resistant habit that looks best in a mass planting, but also works well in rose gardens, as a ground cover, or perennial or shrub bed.

Smoketree Cotinus coggygria 10 - 14'H x 15 - 20'W Growth Rate:  slow Full Sun. This is a large shrub/small tree that has a rounded,reasonably compact habit.  The leaves emerge as a rich maroon-red color and darken to an almost purplish red or black.  In late spring to early summer the rich purple and red flowers appear.  There are several whispy flowers per area that appear to look like puffs of smoke.  This shrub works wonderful as an accent plant or as a hedge row.

Spirea, 'Anthony Waterer'  Spiraea x bumalda 'Anthony Waterer' 3 - 4'H x 4 - 5'W Growth Rate:  fast Full Sun. New leaves are brownish red changing to bluish green and in fall they turn a wine-red to russet-red.  Glower appear in late May and in June.  They are essentially flat-topped, 4 to 6" in diameter, and a vibrant carmine-pink.  Butterflies are attracted to them.  This shrub is best used in borders, in perennial or shrub beds, or as a foundation plant.

Spirea, 'Bridal Wreath' Spiraea prunifolia 4 - 9'H x 6 - 8'W Growth Rate:  medium Full Sun. This is an old-time favorite.  In late April, before the leaves emerge, the whispy branches fill with tiny white flowers.  The leaves are a shiny dark green and may turn yellow-orange to purplish bronze in fall.  This is a very hardy, easy to grow shrub that does very well at the back of a bed or as a hedge.  The wispy branches are a very nice display with our wind.

Spirea, 'Gold Flame' Spiraea x bumalda 'Goldflame' 2 - 3'H x 2 - 3'W Growth Rate:  medium Full Sun to Part Shade. Covered in bright pink flat-topped flower clusters in early to mid summer and again in early fall if pruned and the season is right -- Small bronze-gold spring leaves that turn yellow-green to coppery-orange as the season progresses -- Very heat tolerant low mounded shrub.

Spirea, 'Gold Mound' Spiraea japonica 'Gold Mound' 2 - 4'H x 3 - 4'W Growth Rate:  medium Full Sun. A compact bright plant whose yellow to yellow-green leaves help to highlight any part of the yard.  Late spring has a flush of pink flowers that once faded should be cut back to let the foliage shine through.  These plants work well as foundation plants, in a border, or mixed with grasses to show a sharp yet blending contrast.

Spirea, 'Little Princess' Spiraea japonica 'Little Princess' 1 - 2'H x 2'W Growth Rate:  medium Full Sun to Part Shade. Profuse blooms of small dainty bright pink flower clusters in early summer and again in early fall if pruned and the season cooperates -- Bright green summer foliage that turns dark red in the fall -- Excellent ground cover selection.

Spirea, 'Magic Carpet' Spirea japonica 'Walbuma' 18"H x 2'W Growth Rate:  medium to fast Full Sun. This low spreading, compact, hardy shurb provides three seasons of vibrant foliage and flower color.  Bright gold foliage is accented with striking red leaf tips that change to russet tones in the fall and can retain their beauty to the holidays.  Early spring provides a show of deep pink-purple long lasting flowers that if pruned after they fade may appear again in the fall.  This is an excellent border, groundcover, filler, or container accent.

Spirea, 'Neon Flash'  Spiraea japonica 'Neon Flash' 3 - 4'H x 3 - 4'W Growth Rate:  medium Full Sun. Very showy flowers of pink and red appear in May to June atop compact forms of rich green leaves.  In fall the leaves turn a yellow and copper color.  As with all spireas, this variety is very hardy and diseas resistant.  The faded blossoms should be pruned off and depending on the year a second flush may appear.

Spirea, 'Snow White' Spirea x 'Snow White' 4 - 5'H x 4 - 5'W Growth Rate:  medium Full Sun. Springtime fills this shrubs arching branches with cascades of fragrant white flowers.  The larger bright green leaves change to a rich golden-orange fall color.  An amazing shrub as an accent, foundation plant, or hedge row.

Spirea, 'Vanhoutte' Spirea x vanhouttei 4 - 8'H x 4 - 8'W Growth Rate:  medium Full Sun. An attractive shrub with arching branches that are layered with tiny white flowers in the spring.  It is a dense shrub that provides cover for many songbirds.  The dark blue-green leaves have a silver shadow underneath and turn a slight purple color in the fall.  Useful as a foundation plant, hedge, or specimen.

Spruce, 'Birds Nest' Picea abies 'Nidiformis' 2 - 3'H x 4 - 6'W Growth Rate:  slow Full Sun. Short dark green needles on arching branches that provides all-season color, texture, and landscape contrast -- Excellent for use in rock gardens, as specimen plants, or in a contain on the patio.

Spruce, 'Dwarf Alberta' Picea glauca 'Conica' 5 - 6'H x 3'W Growth Rate:  slow Full Sun. Short dark green soft needled evergreen whose new growth emerges a very bright green in spring -- Very hardy plant that makes a beautiful specimen in any landscape with year round interest.

Spruce, 'Globe Blue' Picea pungens 3 - 5'H x 5 - 6'W Growth Rate:  slow Full Sun. This extremely hardy evergreen is very easy to grow.  It has a dwarf rounded compact habit that works well in containers, as an accent to brighten a dark part of the yard, or as a nice low hedge.  Its bright blue needles and globe shape are a nice addtion to any yard.

Sumac, 'Gro-Low' Rhus aromatica 'Gro-Low' 2'H x 6 - 8'W Growth Rate:  slow to medium Full Sun. Low, wide-spreading habit that is wonderful for stabilizing banks or slightly sloping areas -- Excellent medium green glossy foliage that turns orange-red in fall.

Sumac, 'Tiger Eyes' Rhus typhina 'Bailtiger' 6'H x 6'W Growth Rate:  slow to medium Full Sun to Part Sun. The branches angle upward on pinkish-purple stems while the deeply serrated leaves drape downward, creating an elegant lacy look on this very hardy, adaptable, drought tolerant specimen.  The leaves emerge chartreuse-green in early spring, turn bright yellow during the summer, and then burnt orange and deep scarlet in the fall.  This is an amazing specimen that does well in nearly any sunny location.

Virginia Sweetspire, 'Henry's Garnet' Itea virginica 'Henry's Garnet' 3 - 5'H x 6 - 8'W Growth Rate:  medium Full Sun. Rounded, arching habit that begins the season with perfect, white, lightly fragrant flowers -- Foliage is dark green in summer changing to a fantastic array of reddish purple, scarlet, and crimson in fall.

Sweetspire, 'Little Henry' Itea virginica 'Sprich' 3'H x 3'W Growth Rate:  medium Full Sun to Part Shade. This low care mounding shrub with a compact form is ideal for the foundation, back of the shaded border, smaller space gardens, and containers.  The emerald green foliage becomes a vivid red in autumn.  Summer produces a showy display of long pendulous spikes of fragrant white flowers.

Viburnum, 'Autumn Jazz'  Viburnum dentatum 'Autumn Jazz' 8 - 10'H x 8 - 12'W Growth Rate:  fast Full Shade to Full Sun. This is a very easy to grow, hardy shrub that works well in hedges, groupings, masses, or filler in the shrub border.  In May to early June, flat-topped, 2 to 4" diameter, creamy white, butterfly attracting flowers develop that leter turn to striking blue berries to attract birds.  The dark green leaves put on a spectacular fall display of orange, red, purple, and yellow.

Viburnum, 'Blackhaw' Viburnum prunifolium 12 - 15'H x 8 - 12'W Growth Rate:  slow to medium Full Sun. White, creamy numerous flowers in May that turn to a bluish black, palatable fruit in September, which attracts birds through the winter -- Handsome, dark green, clean foliage turns a purplish to reddish purple fall color -- Great as a specimen planting, shrub border, or group together.

Viburnum, 'Blue Muffin' Viburnum dentatum 'Christom' 5 - 6'H x 4 - 6'W Growth Rate:  medium to fast Full Sun or Shade. This is an ideal shrub for a low hedge, to dress up a shrub beds, or add to the back of the border.  Its compact shape and smaller habit fit nicely into any landscape.  Springtime fills with white flowers that become bright blue pea sized berries that attract song birds.  The green foliage turns a rich red, purple color in the fall.  Very disease resistant and hardy.

Viburnum, 'Burkwood'  Viburnum x burkwoodii 8 - 12'H x 5 - 8'W Growth Rate:  medium Part Shade to Full Sun. In April the spicy fragrance from the pink buds and white flowers permeate the garden.  In July - August the red berries that change to black attract song birds.  The lustrous dark gree above, light grey-brown beneath change to a wine-red color late in the season.  This is an excellent choice for the shrub border or perennial garden and works well with broadleaf evergreens.  It is very hardy and rather disease resistant.

Viburnum, 'Chicago Lustre' Viburnum dentatum 'Synnestvedt' 12 - 15'H x 4 - 6'W Growth Rate:  medium Full Sun to Part Shade. Glossy green medium foliage which turns bronze in the fall that makes an excellent pest and disease resistant shrub border.--  In late spring it is filled with slightly fragrant bright white flowers which in late fall become blue berries that the birds love through the winter months.

Viburnum, 'Cranberry Bush' Viburnum trilobum 'Bailey Compact' 4 - 5'H x 5 - 6'W Growth Rate:  medium Full Sun to Part Shade. In late spring to early summer the plant is covered with large clusters of pale white flowers that become scarlet-red berries in the fall -- Rich green medium summer foliage turns crimson-red in fall -- The flowers attract butterflies and the berries attract the birds in winter -- Excellent hedge or specimen shrub.

Viburnum, 'Doublefile' Viburnum plicatum var tomentosum 8 - 12'H x 15 - 20'W Growth Rate:  medium Part Shade or Part Sun. Possibly the most elegant of flowering shrubs.  Pure snow white, 2 to 4" diameter, flat-topped,fragrange free flowers develop in May.  July to August has the emergence of red,changing to black,song bird attracting berries developing.  Fall color is a reddish purple with the leaves hanging down to creat a "dog-eared" effect.  This shrub is wonderful used in mass, as a screen, in a shrub border, or as the highlight in a foundation planting.  It creates a much needed horizontal effect in what is often a rather vertical looking yard.

Viburnum, 'Dwarf European' Viburnum trilobum 'Compactum' 5 - 6'H x 5 - 6'W Growth Rate:  medium to fast. Full Sun. This quick growing adaptable shrub will add much to any landscape.  Attractive white lacecap flowers adorn the compact slender stemmed upright form in the springtime.  Green leaves are tinged with red as the new growth appears and in fall become a rich red.  Fall also showcases bright red berries that persist through the winter and attract songbirds to they yard.  This plant can be used in several situations, such as hedge, foundation, accent in a perennial bed, and is very adaptable.

Viburnum, 'Juddi' Viburnum x juddii 6 - 8'H x 6 - 8'W Growth Rate:  medium Full Sun to Part Shade. Pinkish buds open to display extremely fragrant butterfly attracting bright white semi-double flowers in late spring followed by reddish-black bird attracting berries in fall -- Woolly dark green foliage turns to burgundy in fall and makes an excellent plant for foundation or shrub borders.

Viburnum, 'Korean Spice' Viburnum carlesii 4 - 5'H x 5 - 6'W  Excellent plant for foundation, shrub borders, or as a specimen because in early spring it fills with pink to reddish buds that open to small snowball shaped clusters of bright white, semi-double, extremely fragrant flowers -- Black berries in late fall attract birds through the winter.

Viburnum, 'Mohawk' Viburnum x burkwoodii 'Mohawk' 5 - 7'H x 5 - 7'W Growth Rate:  medium Full Sun to Part Shade. This rugged high performing cultivar develops an upright mass of attractive green, glossy foliage that bears red and antique gold color in the fall.  Springtime flower clusters are fragrant and have dark red buds that open to white petals.  The red fruit develops in late summer, matures to black in the fall, and persists through the winter.  This is a carefree shrub that works well in the back of the border, at the foundation, or as an informal hedge.

Viburnum, 'Mohican' Viburnum lantana 'Mohican' 6 - 8'H x 6 - 8'W Growth Rate:  medium Full Sun to Part Sun. Selected for its compact growth and dense, dark green foliage that becomes red in the fall.  Mid-May fills the plant with fragrant, creamy-white blossoms.  The showy, long lasting orange-red fruit last for up to four weeks in mid-summer and provide a spectacular display that attract songbirds to the landscape.  Excellent for a shrub border or as a screen.

Virburnum, 'Shasta'  Viburnum plicatum var. tomentosum 7 - 12'H x 10 - 15'W Growth Rate:  medium Part Shade to Part Sun. A wonderful, but underused, shrub with wide-spreading horizontally accentuated branches.  The white flowers occur in ball-shaped clusters in late spring and can literally hide the foliage.  The rich green leaves take on a dark maroon color in September or October.  Red berries, turning black, emerge in July and attract song birds to the landscape.  This is a wonderful shrub to add horizontal interest to the landscape and help any space appear larger.  It can be used in shrub beds, borders, in mass, or as a foundation plant.

Viburnum, 'Snowball' Viburnum opulus 4 - 6'H x 5 - 7'W Growth Rate:  medium Full Sun. This is an amazing shrub valued mostly for its spectacular display of long lasting flowers.  Generally, early May finds the shrub covered in snowball shaped blossoms that emerge apple green color and turn bright white.  This variety does not produce berries.  The glossy dark green leaves change to yellow-red and reddish purple in fall.  This is an ideal shrub for a border, hedge, specimen, or foundation planting.

Virburnum, 'Willowwood' Viburnum x rhytidophylloides 8 - 15'H x 6 - 10'W Growth Rate:  medium Part Shade to Full Sun. This shrub makes a nice screen, a hardy foundation plant, or works well blended with broadleaf evergreens.  Mid-May will see a flush of delicate, showy, white flowers.  The berries are not always present on this plant, but when present emerge red and turn to black.  There is no real fall color, but depending on the extent of the winter, it may keep its leaves all season

Weigela, 'Midnight Wine' Weigela florida 'Elvera' 18 - 24"H x 2'W Growth Rate:  medium Full Sun. This compact, dwarf, mounding shrub displays bright rose-pink flowers in early spring and sometimes again in late fall that are really striking against the rich, dark metallic burgundy leaves.  This is a great addition to perennial borders or in containers.

Weigela, 'Red Prince' Weigela florida 'Red Prince' 5 - 6'H x 5 - 7'W Growth Rate:  medium Full Sun. This shrub is best used in the shrub or perennial border, or in mass.  In spring and often in late summer it is filled with true red flowers that do not fade.  It has a nice upright habit and looks best with a contrasting perennial planted at its feet.  It is very hardy and disease resistant.  There is some annual dieback and winter injury that requires yearly pruning for the best look.

Weigela, 'Variegated' Weigela florida 'Variegata' 4 - 6'H x 4 - 6'W Growth Rate:  medium Full Sun. In late spring the plant fills with trumpet-shaped bright pink flowers that attract hummingbirds -- A dense shrub with variegated foliage to provide great landscape contrast in borders.

Weigela, 'Wine & Roses' Weigela florida 'Alexandra' 3 - 5'H x 3 - 5'W Growth Rate:  medium Full Sun. This is a compact, mounding shrub that displays bright rose-pink, tubular flowers in May and sometimes again in late summer.  The leaves are a striking dark burgundy-purple color all season.  This is an extremely hardy plant with dramatic foliage that attracts hummingbirds to the landscape.  Works well in any bed or border combination or in containers.

Willow, 'Dappled' Salix integra 'Hakura Nishiki' 10 - 12'H x 6 - 10'W Growth Rate:  medium Full Sun to Part Sun. A striking shrub or small tree that will fit into even the smallest garden.  Attractive, graceful shrub with weeping branches displaying striking pink stems and foliage mottled in white, green, and pink highlights.  An extremely hardy plant that adds interest into any shrub bed or border.

Wisteria, 'Amethyst Falls' Wisteria frutescens 'Amethyst Falls' 8 - 10'H x 8 - 10'W Growth Rate:  fast Full Sun to Part Shade. This twining plant is ideal for a smaller space, in a container, or espalier onto a trellis, arbor, and over a gateway.  It may be pruned back heavily in winter since it flowers on new growth.  It is very adaptable and disease resistant.  It blooms heavily in April and May, then continues to bloom sporadically through the summer on new growth.  The blooms are slightly fragrant and composed of intense blue racemes 4 to 6 inches long.

Deciduous vine with vigorous twining stems that fill with fragrant, long, drooping clusters of pea-like purple blooms in spring.  Striking when trained on a sturdy arbor or let to cover a pergola or patio, where the flowers can hang through the structure like huge clusters of grapes.

Installation

• First call J.U.L.I.E. to have all utilities marked before you dig.
• Place shrub next to proposed location.
• Next, dig the hole deep enough for the container or ball and allow an extra 6" on each side of the ball leaving 1 - 2" of the root ball above the existing grade.
• Place the shrub ball carefully in the hole, pull the burlap from the top half, and slit the bottom half. In addition, remove any wire or rope caging. If the shrub is container grown, remove the container. If roots are encircling the bottom of the container, use a sharp knife to cut them apart.
• Backfill around the ball and lightly compact the soil as you are backfilling the hole. This will assist in removing any excess air pockets in the hole.
• Water the shrub. (approximately 1/2 hour with a small gentle stream of water)
• Mulch or rock around the base of shrub, extending out to the perimeter of the ball or covering the bed in which it is placed with a depthness of 2 - 3".
• Prune out any dead or damaged branches.

*Note: all deciduous shrubs should be covered with a tarp while moving.

*Note: Grade the bed area and allow a slight pitch away from the building for accurate drainage.
